Dr. DiGiovanni is an internationally recognized foot and ankle surgeon who has been invited to teach his subspecialty around the world. He earned his BA from Dartmouth College and his MD from the Brown University-Dartmouth Medical School Combined Program. He completed his orthopaedic residency at Brown University before pursuing fellowships in orthopedic trauma at Brown Medical School, in adult joint reconstruction/ replacement at the Hospital for Special Surgery, in foot and ankle sports medicine and arthroscopy at Harbor-UCLA and USC Affiliated Hospitals, and in foot and ankle surgery at U. Washington Harborview Medical Center. He also completed the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) Traveling Fellowship at Instituto Rizzoli and Instituto Ortopedico Galeazzi in Italy.
Before joining Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital in 2014, Dr. DiGiovanni served as Professor and Program Director of the Orthopaedic Residency at the Brown University School of Medicine for almost a decade and a half, where he was also Chief of the Foot and Ankle Service, Foot and Ankle Fellowship Program Director, and Founder of the Joe DiMaggio Sports Foot and Ankle Center. Since then, Dr. DiGiovanni has served as Chief of the Foot & Ankle Services of both Mass General and Newton-Wellesley Hospitals, as well as Vice Chair of Academic Affairs in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Mass General. He also co-founded the Foot & Ankle Research and Innovation Lab (FARIL) and is a Past President of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society.
Dr. DiGiovanni has been honored numerous times by his peers as one of America's Top Surgeons and Best Doctors and has been perennially recognized as one of Boston's Top Doctors. He has also been acknowledged many times by his patients with Patient Choice, Compassionate Doctor, and On-Time Doctor Awards. He has received the Excellence in Teaching Award by his residents and has received the Order of Merit from the Orthopedic Research and Education Foundation for his philanthropic support over the years.
Dr. DiGiovanni has served on the surgical advisory board of numerous global companies, published over 200 articles, edited five medical textbooks, and helped gain patents and FDA approval for many foot and ankle technologies designed to improve patient care. He has served on the editorial boards of various journals and been a consulting physician for athletes from many sports programs, including the US Ski Team, US Olympic Teams, NFL, NBA, MLB, PGA, the Boston Ballet, Boston Cannons Men’s Lacrosse, Boston Breakers Women’s Soccer, Boston, Northeastern, BU, and Harvard College Athletics, Formula 1 Racing, and the Premier League. He continues to teach surgery and lecture across the world, and this past year was President of North America’s Orthopaedic Foot Club—although Dr. DiGiovanni’s greatest professional commitment has always been to the patients he cares for and the residents and fellows he teaches every day.
Currently, Dr. DiGiovanni is a Professor at Harvard Medical School and Vice Chair (Academic Affairs) of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at MGH. As Chief Emeritus of the Foot and Ankle Service, he helps oversee the foot and ankle programs at both Mass General and Newton-Wellesley Hospitals in Boston. He enjoys serving on AOFAS Committees, participating in AAOS ICLs, and especially supporting the AOFAS Resident Scholar Mentor Program each year. Dr. DiGiovanni has enjoyed caring for patients for almost 30 years, teaching residents for almost 27 years, and mentoring fellows for over 15 years.

Research
Dr. DiGiovanni's research is devoted to improving foot and ankle function with state-of-the-art procedures involving minimally invasive arthroscopy techniques, cutting edge below-the-knee ligament and fracture care for the injured athlete, total ankle replacement, growth factor incorporation to improve bone healing, limb salvage surgery, deformity correction, and various other emerging bone, soft tissue and cartilage procedures designed to maximize and preserve the function of the foot and ankle.
Dr. DiGiovanni has served on the Managerial Board of the journal Foot and Ankle International, the International Editorial Board of the European Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery and as consultant reviewer for a number of other orthopaedic journals, including the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.
Dr. DiGiovanni has authored over 200 peer review articles, book chapters and books involving the orthopaedic management of many different foot and ankle problems.
