What Are We Measuring?

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a term for a large group of lung diseases that can block air flow in the lungs and cause breathing problems. Two common conditions of COPD are chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services evaluates 30-day mortality and readmission rates for COPD patients:

  • 30-Day Mortality Rate: The percentage of COPD patients who died within 30 days of admission to the hospital
  • 30-Day Readmission Rate: The percentage of COPD patients who were discharged from the hospital and were readmitted to any hospital for any reason in the next 30 days
