In Memoriam: Remembering Sports Medicine Surgeon and Colleague Dr. Mark Price
Mark Price, MD, PhD, an orthopedic surgeon in Mass General’s Sports Medicine Service and Head Team Physician for the New England Patriots, passed away this summer after a battle with leiomyosarcoma, a rare cancer that originates from the body's smooth muscles. Dr. Price was a veteran, a family man, and a valued colleague and friend. He resided in the Boston area for 28 years, attending MIT to get his doctorate in medical physics before getting his MD at Harvard Medical School.
Price worked in Mass General’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, first as a resident in the Harvard Combined Orthopedic Residency Program, and then as a sports medicine fellow. He later returned as an attending surgeon at Mass General and member of the Harvard Medical School faculty in 2015, continuing to work with the Sox and Patriots while playing a key role in the department of orthopaedic surgery for the past nine years. Dr. Price specialized in sports medicine and shoulder surgery, but was perhaps best known for his kindness, dedication, sense of humor, and compassionate manner.
The hospital mourns the loss of this humble leader, and the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery feels his absence deeply. Department Chief Mitch Harris, MD, shares, "Mark leaves an enduring legacy in the patients he cared for, the colleagues he worked with, and the many lives he touched. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones as they endure this unthinkable loss, and we add our voices in remembrance of a wonderful man who meant so much, to so many."
Pete Asnis, MD, Mark's colleague in the Sports Medicine Service, adds, "Mark was a superstar in all domains. We will all remember his self-deprecating, quick wit that put us at ease in any situation. He was a gifted clinician who was adored by his patients for his genuine kindness and surgical skill, and a war hero who put his life on the line for his country. Mark used his personal gifts to make everyone around him feel loved, and was one of my favorite people."
