About Giovanna Ignacio Subira Medina, MD, PhD

Dr. Medina's clinical expertise includes the prevention and care of sports injuries in high level competitive athletes, recreational athletes, and those who just want to remain active at any age. From high school and collegiate athletes to the older sportsperson, Dr Medina is devoted to providing leading-edge care and helping patients of all levels reach their full potential and get back to what they love doing. As a former high-level athlete, she is familiar with the challenges that athletes face, including those unique to female athletes. She understands firsthand what it takes to overcome an injury and can relate to her patients on a personal level. Dr. Medina believes in treating the whole athlete not only the injury and works collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team that includes physical therapy, athletic trainers, endocrinology, cardiology, ObGyn, nutrition, mental health, and rehabilitation experts.

Dr. Medina is a former Team Physician for the Brazilian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and has participated in several big events such as the Olympic and Paralympic Games (2012 and 2016), Pan-American Games (2011 and 2015) and several World Championships. She is currently one of the Team Physicians for Stonehill College and several local high schools.

Dr. Medina obtained her MSc and PhD in Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, focusing on shoulder and elbow injuries. She has a passion for orthopedic sports medicine, research, and innovation. Her research has focused on sports related injuries, rotator cuff, shoulder instability, injuries in the throwing athlete, osteochondral defects, and a myriad of elbow conditions. Additionally, she has several ongoing research studies about cartilage restoration, meniscal and ACL injuries, as well as research on female athletes and sex-based differences in sports medicine. Dr. Medina’s research has been awarded several times, including the Tornier Award from the Latin American Shoulder and Elbow Society and the Best Research from the International Skeletal Society in 2020. Dr. Medina collaborates with several departments such as Radiology, Biomechanics, and Innovation. Recently, she has also focused her research on the application of artificial intelligence in orthopedics and sports medicine. Moreover, Dr Medina was one of five orthopedic surgeons worldwide to be selected for the prestigious ISAKOS Global Traveling Fellowship in 2023. This fellowship is intended to foster the international exchange of knowledge and skills in the field of orthopedic sports surgery. Dr. Medina brings all her clinical, research, and personal experience to provide the best care to her patients.
