In the early 1900s, the social work movement in America created many programs and services that we largely take for granted today. Early social workers recognized that poverty and lack of education could exacerbate illness, and were crusaders for social equality.
Who are social workers and what do they do?
Our clinical social workers are licensed mental health professionals trained to help you cope with daily challenges to life's most difficult situations. We offer a unique combination of counseling and referral to community resources.

Social work services are private and confidential.
When would I want to see a social worker?
You may want to speak with a social worker when you or your family are facing a challenge such as:
- Coping with illness, injury, treatment and recovery
- Mental health or substance use concerns
- Grief and bereavement
- Relationship, parenting or family concerns
- Abuse, neglect, violence and other safety issues
- Job, school or other life stresses
Social work services are available to you and your family throughout your care at Mass General.

Mass General clinical social workers are trained in individual, couple, family, and group counseling. Social work training is unique in that it focuses both on individuals and their life circumstances. We are skilled in engaging family, friends and community resources to help problem-solve.
Are social work services confidential?
Social work services are confidential with limited exceptions which your social worker will discuss with you. Social workers at Mass General work as part of the health care team and will share with the team only the information that is relevant to your medical care.
How much do Mass General social work services cost?
Inpatient and some outpatient social work services are included in your hospital care at no additional cost. When there is a fee for social work services it is typically covered by health insurance with your standard co-pay. For more information contact your insurer or call us.
How do I reach a Mass General social worker?

When are social workers available?
Social workers are available during business hours 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, seven days a week, including holidays. There is also a social worker available evenings and overnight for hospital emergencies. If you are experiencing an emergency in the community, please call 911 or go to your local emergency room.
