Primary Care - Faculty
Steven J. Atlas MD
Dr. Atlas practices general adult primary care internal medicine in Internal Medicine Associates (IMA), the largest Mass General-affiliated internal medicine practice and located on the main hospital campus in Boston. He has practiced in this group since he came to Mass General as a medicine intern in 1987. Having gone to medical school in New York City at the start of the AIDS epidemic, he has remained interested in the primary care management of HIV infected individuals. He enjoys caring for a wide range of patients in terms of personal backgrounds and health issues. Though increasingly uncommon among primary care physicians, his patients requiring hospitalization are admitted to his private inpatient service, and he is responsible for directing their hospital care. The importance of continuity of care and a familiar, trusted face is never more important for patients than when they are admitted for an acute medical problem or an elective procedure.
Ariel Frey-Vogel, MD, MAT
Dr. Frey-Vogel is a primary care physician at Mass General Family Care in Everett. She completed medical school at Yale University and then her residency at Massachusetts General Hospital in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. She currently cares for people of all ages at her primary care office in Everett. She also serves as an Associate Program Director for the Mass General for Children Pediatric Residency where she helps to oversee the training of the pediatric residents. She is committed to providing excellent care to everyone who walks in her door, focusing on getting to know each person as an individual and working with each individual to determine their healthcare priorities. She is very supportive of the LGBT community and provides a safe supportive environment for all of her patients. In her free time, she enjoys spending time outside with her husband and two small children. Dr. Frey-Vogel is currently accepting new adolescent patients, and has limited openings for new adult patients.
Susan Hata, MD
Dr. Hata is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics and cares for both same-sex couples and their children.
Infectious Disease
Kevin Ard, MD, MPH
Dr. Ard is a physician in the Infectious Disease Division at Massachusetts General Hospital and a member of the faculty and advisory board of the National LGBT Health Education Center at the Fenway Institute. His interests include LGBT health education, HIV prevention, and the care of individuals with HIV and hepatitis C.
Julie Freedman, ANP, DHS
Julie Freedman is the senior nurse practitioner at the Mass General Sexually Transmitted Disease/Genitourinary Infectious Disease (STD/GID) Clinic. She has been with Mass General for over 36 years and has worked in the STD/GID Unit since 1986. She completed her undergraduate Nursing Education at SUNY Buffalo and her Masters at Simmons College. She obtained her Doctorate in Human Sexuality from the Institute for the Advanced Study of Human Sexuality in San Francisco and participated in the clinical pastoral education for health care professionals at Mass General. Julie has always been an advocate for LGBT rights in both her personal and her professional life. The issues surrounding the healthcare of LGBT individuals has comprised a substantial part of her practice here at Mass General and continues to be a specialty focus. Julie is a tireless advocate for the care of her patients and combines clinical expertise with a positive outlook on human sexuality. When not in the hospital, Julie enjoys quilting and singing and believes that being part of supportive communities helps us all to thrive. Julie is part of a team of NPs and physicians in the STD/GID Unit, all of whom are trained in STD/GID prevention and treatment. To make an appointment with Julie please call 617-726-3236. Behavioral Health
BJ Beck, MSN, MD
Dr. Beck is a staff psychiatrist in the Andrews Unit, an outpatient unit at Mass General initially devoted to meeting the psychiatric needs of individuals with HIV, but now serving outpatients with a variety of common issues, such as depression and anxiety disorders. Prior to medical school at the University of Vermont, Dr. Beck was a family nurse practitioner at a family practice residency program in Augusta, Maine. She completed her psychiatric residency and fellowship in psychosomatic medicine at Mass General. Always maintaining a practice at Mass General, she also worked for over a decade at the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center, where she developed a collaborative care model with the PCPs, and created a community psychiatry rotation for Mass General/McLean residents. She also developed a primary care psychiatry rotation for internal medicine residents from Boston Medical Center. Currently, Dr. Beck works part time in managed care, and is a full time BFA student at Mass College of Art and Design.
Michael S. Boroughs, PhD
Dr. Boroughs is a clinical psychologist in the Behavioral Medicine Service at Mass General and a Fellow at Harvard Medical School. Trained as a clinical scientist, he is a Project Director for an NIH funded multi-site clinical trial working with gay, bisexual, and other sexual minority men with trauma histories. He also has a grant under review to develop a psychological intervention to address bullying among LGBT emerging adults. He served the field for two years on the APA’s Commission on Accreditation from 2010 to 2012. Together with senior clinical researchers at Mass General, Dr. Boroughs recently authored a journal article on cultural competence in working with gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender individuals in psychological practice. Dr. Boroughs’ clinical and research interests include body image and physical appearance, human sexuality and gender roles, and sexual health. One notable interest involves measurement and psychometric issues as they relate to sexual orientation in research and translate into psychological assessment in clinical settings. Additional clinical interests include substance use and its impact upon psychological and physical health outcomes. Anthony Provazza, LICSW
Anthony is a clinical social worker who has over 30 years of experience in the field of psychotherapy. He received his undergraduate degree from U Mass Dartmouth and Masters Degree from Boston University. He has been providing individual and couples therapy in community mental health center settings as well as in private practice. He has many years of experience working with patients and their family members coping with cancer diagnoses and the impact of illness on quality of life. In addition, his experience and interests include assisting LGBT individuals who are struggling with coming out to family members and friends, struggles with leaving straight marriages and talking with their children about the changes in their family should they decide to end a marriage. Arthur J. Siegel, MD
Dr. Siegel is the director of internal medicine at McLean Hospital and the Mass General Internal Medicine Associates, Belmont, MA. He is an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and a fellow of the American College of Physicians. Clinical expertise includes substance dependency, eating disorders, transgender and sports medicine. He is the author of more than 50 original research papers on diverse subjects from medical complications of cocaine usage to the evaluation and management of hyponatremia in psychiatric patients. Orthopaedics
Mark Vrahas, MD
Dr. Vrahas is the Robert W. Lovett Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Vice Chairman of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He completed a residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh and a fellowship in Orthopaedic Trauma and hip reconstruction at the University of Toronto. Prior to moving to Boston he worked in New Orleans at Charity Hospital. Charity provided a wonderful experience working with a very diverse patient population across the spectrum of social economic statuses, sexual orientations, and gender identities. He has many friends in the LGBT community and believes all people deserve competent and compassionate care. He specializes in fracture care and hip replacement surgery.
Weight Center
W. Scott Butsch, MD, MSc
Dr. Butsch is an obesity medicine specialist at the Mass General Weight Center and an Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School (HMS). He completed a clinical nutrition fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and was one of the two inaugural fellows in obesity medicine and nutrition subspecialty fellowship program, first established at the Mass General/HMS in 2007. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Clinical Nutrition and Obesity Medicine. He works in a multi-disciplinary clinic, comprised of dietitians, psychologists and medical sub-specialists and bariatric surgeons, which offers a variety of treatments for patients with obesity. Because of the complexities of weight gain and changes in body composition, especially as a result of hormonal effects during transition, Dr. Butsch and his colleagues often care for transgender patients with obesity who are at various stages of transition. He recognizes obesity can be a limitation and weight gain can be one of the results of hormonal therapy. Lastly, Dr Butsch is a passionate advocate for his patients and actively participates at both the state and federal levels to reduce weight stigma and discrimination and improve coverage and reimbursement for the treatment of obesity.
Fatima Cody Stanford, MD, MPH
Dr. Stanford is an obesity medicine & nutrition physician at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School and Zuckerman Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government where she is completing her Master of Public Administration. Dr. Stanford received her BS and MPH from Emory University and her MD from the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine. She served as a health communications fellow at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and worked as a behavioral sciences intern at the American Cancer Society. Upon completion of her MPH, she received the Gold Congressional Award, the highest honor that Congress bestows upon America’s youth. Dr. Stanford has completed a medicine and media internship at the Discovery Channel, and authored a USMLE Step 1 medical review text. An American Medical Association Foundation Leadership Award recipient in 2005, she was also selected for the AMA Paul Ambrose Award for national leadership among resident physicians in 2009. Dr. Stanford completed her internal medicine and pediatrics residency at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine/Palmetto Health. The American College of Physicians selected her as the 2013 recipient of the Joseph E. Johnson Leadership Award, an award presented to the Associate member of the College who has demonstrated qualities that exemplify the College's mission "to enhance the quality and effectiveness of health care by fostering excellence and professionalism in the practice of medicine".
Neurology
Reiner See, MD
Dr. See devotes his clinical time in the Mass General IOM (Intraoperative Neuromonitoring) division. Dr. See is board certified in both Neurology and in Neuromuscular Medicine. He completed his medical school training at University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Medicine and Surgery. He did his Neurology residency and Neuromuscular Medicine fellowship training at University Hospitals Case Medical Center/Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Dr. See received his fellowship in Intraoperative Neuromonitoring at Massachusetts General Hospital prior to joining the faculty. Since 2010, Dr. See has been an active member of PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays), an organization devoted to promoting the health and well-being of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons, and their families through support, education, and advocacy. He has spoken on behalf of PFLAG at several university orientation programs. Dr. See is an active member of the Mass General Employee Resource Group.
