Radiology Residency: Program Leadership
Pamela Schaefer, MD, MPH - Vice Chair of Education
Dr. Pamela Schaefer joined the MGH Radiology faculty in 1994 following completion of her residency and Neuroradiology fellowship at MGH. Dr. Schaefer is currently Professor of Radiology, Harvard Medical School, and Vice Chair of Education, MGH Department of Radiology. Dr. Schaefer was recently appointed as Vice-Chair, Clinical Education Integration, for Mass General Brigham Enterprise Radiology. She is the inaugural incumbent of the Theresa McLoud, MD, Endowed Chair in Radiology Education. Dr. Schaefer has a long history of service to our profession, having served as President of the American Society of Neuroradiology, the Eastern Neuroradiologic Society and the New England Roentgen Ray Society. She has also held numerous leadership roles in radiology education, including Chair of the Education Committee of the AUR, Chair of the Program Director's Committee of the ASNR, Chair of the Scientific Program Committee of the ARRS, Co-Chair of the Introduction to Academic Radiology program sponsored by the RSNA and Chair of ADVICER (Alliance of Directors and Vice Chairs of Education), a special interest group of the AUR. Dr. Schaefer is a Fellow of the American College of Radiology, Deputy Editor of Education for JACR and past Senior Editor of AJNR. She received the ASNR Outstanding Contributions to Neuroradiology Education in 2022. She served as the MGH Neuroradiology Fellowship Director for over 20 years
Shaunagh McDermott, MBBCH, BAO - Program Director
Shaunagh received her medical degree from the University of Ireland, Galway. She completed her Radiology Residency at St Vincent’s University Hospital in Dublin, Ireland in 2010. She subsequently came to MGH, performed multiple fellowships in Abdominal and Thoracic Radiology and successfully completed the Alternate Pathway in 2015, when she joined the Thoracic Radiology Faculty at MGH. She joined the Radiology Associates Executive Committee in 2019 and the Resident Education Committee in 2020. She became Associate Program Director for the MGH Radiology Residency in 2021. Since 2021, she has also served as the co-chair of the Education Subcommittee of the Radiology Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee and the Director of Thoracic MRI. She serves on Education and Scientific Committees of the STR, RSNA and ARRS. She is nationally known for her scholarship on various topics in Thoracic Radiology. In 2021, she was instrumental in managing the radiology resident recruitment process and establishing the Radiology Resident Clinical Educator Track for which she serves as an advisor.
Ranu Shailam, MD - Associate Program Director
Ranu graduated from Union College with a BS in Biology and an interdepartmental major in Studio Fine Arts and received his MD from Albany Medical College, all part of an accelerated BS/MD program. After medical school he did a post-doctoral fellowship in molecular biology at Georgetown University Medical Center where his research focused on the development of the inner ear. He completed his radiology residency at St. Vincent Hospital where he was a chief resident. He completed a fellowship in pediatric radiology at MGH and has since been a member of the Division of Pediatric Radiology. In addition to being an associate program director in the residency, he is also the program director of the pediatric radiology fellowship. He serves as an advisor for the Radiology Resident Clinical Educator Track. His interests are education, mentoring, clinical care and global health.
Samantha Harrington, MD, MSC - Associate Program Director
Sam received a BA in anthropology from Brown University. After graduation, she worked in Denmark and subsequently received an MSc from Oxford in medical anthropology. She completed her premedical requirements at Harvard Extension School while working in pediatric obesity research at MGH. Sam completed her MD at the University of Massachusetts, followed by radiology residency at MGH (including the accelerated nuclear medicine pathway). She served as a chief resident in 2019–2020 and completed her pediatric radiology fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital. She is now a clinical instructor in the divisions of Nuclear Medicine and Pediatric Radiology with interests in trainee wellness and pediatric oncologic imaging.
Ben Kozak, MD - Associate Program Director
Ben graduated from Pomona College in 2010 with a BA in Biology. He worked for several years in healthcare journalism before completing medical school at the University of California, San Francisco in 2016. He finished his diagnostic radiology residency at MGH in 2021 and served as a chief resident in 2019-2020. He completed a neuroradiology fellowship in 2022 at MGH. He is now a clinical instructor in the Division of Neuroradiology with interests in clinical education and stroke imaging.
Jacquie William-Johnson, BA - Program Coordinator
Jacquie graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Boston with a BA in English Literature. She worked for nineteen-plus years at Fidelity Investments, with the last 10 as manager of an inbound customer service phone team. In 2009, she began as a teleradiology coordinator at Mass General Hospital. She was promoted to credentialing coordinator for the Mass General Department of Radiology in 2013 and to the Diagnostic Radiology Program Coordinator position in 2019.
