IAEA Meeting on Radiation Protection

The IAEA Meeting on Radiation Protection was held to advise the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on actions to strengthen: 1) radiation protection of patients and staff and 2) safety culture in image-guided interventional procedures performed in radiology, cardiology, urology, gastroenterology, vascular surgery, orthopedic surgery and other specialties. Dr. Rehani was one of the invited experts.

It was recommended that a variety of outreach material should be developed. The material on interventional procedures the IAEA website was updated. There was a proposal to start a new Coordinated Research Project (CRP) with focus on correlation of skin reaction with dose parameters. Another proposal was to seek standardization of dose displays that requires actions to approach manufacturers (through DITTA) such as a joint meeting on this issue with professional societies and manufacturers. New e-learning material containing videos shall be prepared to show how protection can be practiced in interventional suites.
