Under the MGH/Massachusetts General Physicians Organization (MGPO) Office of the Chief Medical Officer, the Fellowship in Quality and Safety is a two-year administrative fellowship offering a unique immersion experience and curriculum in the quality and safety activities of Mass General.
Overview
Under the guidance of the fellowship director and other fellowship faculty, fellows will gain exposure to some of the following aspects of health care management:
- Evaluation and management of patient safety events
- Development and implementation of unit-based, departmental, and hospital-wide quality improvement initiatives
- Internal and external quality measurement and reporting
- Hospital administration
- Clinical and regulatory compliance
- Diversity, equity and inclusion
- Hospital capacity and operations
- Payment systems and physician incentives
- Other areas
Requirements
Applicants should have career aspirations in quality and safety and prior experience in leadership. Applicants must have completed residency or current fellowship by the time they apply for the fellowship and must be board-certified or board-eligible in their chosen specialty. Gap year physicians do not qualify.
Curriculum
Fellows will:
- Gain an understanding of the complexities of quality and safety via frequent exposure to and mentorship from senior hospital and system leaders.
- Participate in a management curriculum and didactics, projects, committees, and task forces that will enable them to develop competency in several areas of quality and safety including (but not limited to) hospital capacity, operations and efficiency, hospital and provider payment, physician credentialing, performance evaluation and professionalism, care redesign tactics, quality measurement and reporting, quality improvement, safety event evaluation and management, regulatory compliance and human resource management.
- Develop the requisite skills, knowledge, and perspective to succeed in a healthcare quality and safety management position.
