About Sarah Eby, MD, PhD
Sarah Eby, MD, PhD is an assistant professor in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Harvard Medical School and a physician-scientist with Mass General Brigham and the Spaulding Rehabilitation Network who specializes in the prevention and treatment of both chronic and acute musculoskeletal and sports-related injuries. Her patient-centered treatment practice utilizes non-operative care involving exercise therapies, ultrasound-guided procedures, and orthobiologics (such as platelet rich plasma). She received her MD and PhD from Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and completed her physical medicine and rehabilitation residency at the University of Utah, where she also served as a chief resident. She subsequently completed a multidisciplinary primary care sports medicine fellowship at the University of Utah Orthopaedic Center. She has experience caring for athletes in a variety of sports, skill levels, and abilities, including University of Utah Athletics, Snowbird Ski Clinic, Boston Renegades, USA Para Climbing, and the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. She is currently the head team physician for the USA Para Alpine Ski Team. Her research interests include predicting and preventing tendon injury.

Research
Dr. Eby completed her doctoral dissertation in the Orthopedic Biomechanics Laboratory at Mayo Clinic under the advisement of Dr. Kai-Nan An. Her work applied ultrasound shear wave elastography (SWE) to assess the mechanical properties of skeletal muscle, including validating SWE with simultaneous in vitro materials testing. This work was the first to establish the relationship between global, invasive measures of muscle stiffness and local, noninvasive measures of muscle material properties (SWE), setting the stage for numerous in vivo investigations of muscle and tendon material properties. She then completed a research fellowship with Dr. Kristin Zhao in the Assistive and Restorative Technology Laboratory at Mayo Clinic mentoring junior researchers and establishing laboratory guidelines for in vivo SWE evaluation of healthy, exercise-trained, and pathologic skeletal muscle. Working alongside Dr. Dan Cushman at the University of Utah, she developed an interest in predicting and preventing tendon injury, which continues to be the focus of her ongoing research.
