About David Shaye, MD
Dr. David Shaye specializes in aesthetic and reconstructive surgery of the face, head, and neck. This includes aesthetic procedures such as a facelift, blepharoplasty, or browlift. Dr. Shaye is experienced in rebuilding all parts of the face from skin cancer (Moh's) surgery to birth deformities of the lips, nose, and ears. He offers a wide range of options for facial reconstruction after car accidents and injuries of the bones of the face, which include the spectrum from free tissue transfer to scar management. Rhinoplasty and improvement of the appearance and function of the nose are also important aspects of his practice.
A U.S. Department of State Fulbright Scholar, Dr. Shaye earned his bachelor's degree in physics from Hamilton College and his medical degree from Albany Medical College. He completed residency training in otolaryngology–head and neck surgery at the University of California at Davis and fellowship training in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Minnesota.
Dr. Shaye focuses his research on global surgery or the delivery of surgical services to areas with limited resources. Specific research interests include cleft lip and palate, the burden of disease assessment, and mobile phone technology to improve surgical follow-up. Dr. Shaye regularly performs surgery for children with cleft lip and palate deformities in Zimbabwe, serves as a surgical team leader with Doctors Without Borders, and participates in a teaching partnership with the Ministry of Health in Rwanda. He has volunteered extensively in Malawi, Bhutan, Dominica, Guatemala, Nigeria, and Nepal.
Watch this video of Dr. Shaye's participation with Operation of Hope, an all-volunteer surgical team that provides surgeries to children in developing countries who are born with facial deformities.

Research
Dr. Shaye is active in research to optimize the delivery of high quality, cost-effective surgical care in resource poor settings. He has performed epidemiological research in sub-Saharan Africa examining the geo-spatial distribution of cleft lip and palate deformities in Zimbabwe over a 7-year period. The geographic distribution of patients with cleft lip and palate are used to target and deliver better surgical care. Other research interests include the use of mobile phone technology to improve surgical follow up in countries with significant geographic constraints.
Dr. Shaye's research also focuses on the use of intra-operative imaging to perform less invasive, more accurate repair of maxillofacial trauma injuries. Intra-operative imaging with modern, portable CT scanners offers real time information on facial fracture alignment and assists in the precise placement of orbital implants. This can obviate the need for more invasive surgery, leading to quicker recovery, less postoperative pain, and less scarring.
