About Jonah Cohen, MD

Jonah Cohen, MD, is an interventional endoscopist, Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and the Director of Bariatric Endoscopy at the Massachusetts General Hospital.

Dr. Cohen received his undergraduate degree from Brown University and completed his medical degree at Brown Medical School. During medical school, Dr. Cohen was awarded a research fellowship at the National Institutes of Health by Howard Hughes Medical Institute to study tumor biology. He completed General Surgery internship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and residency in Internal Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC). He subsequently completed fellowships in both Gastroenterology as well as Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy at BIDMC-Harvard Medical School. Following his fellowships, Dr. Cohen did additional training in endoscopic suturing, submucosal endoscopy, and bariatric endoscopy.

Dr. Cohen's clinical and research interests focus on novel, minimally invasive endoscopic techniques to prevent, diagnose, treat and palliate gastrointestinal conditions ranging from oncology to obesity. These techniques include endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) for both benign and malignant disease, therapeutic endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for Barrett's esophagus, pancreatic necrosectomy, endoluminal stenting, submucosal endoscopy, endoscopic gallbladder drainage, endoscopic suturing as well as endoscopic resection of complex digestive tract polyps and early cancers through endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). While on faculty at BIDMC, Dr. Cohen founded the Center for Bariatric Endoscopy to help manage patients with obesity using non-surgical techniques and in 2019 he performed the first Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty at BIDMC. In addition to primary endoscopic weight loss therapies, Dr. Cohen manages patients who have regained weight or had complications following bariatric surgery.

Dr. Cohen has published extensively in many journals, including Cancer ResearchEndoscopy and Surgical Endoscopy and is the author of several book chapters. Dr. Cohen has a strong interest in digital health, entrepreneurship, device development, artificial intelligence as well as nutrition.
