Gynecologic Oncologist
About Alex Melamed, MD, MPH
Alexander “Alex” Melamed, MD, is a gynecologic oncologist who provides surgical care and chemotherapy to patients with cancers of the female reproductive system such as ovarian, uterine, cervical, and vulvar cancers. His goal as a physician is to get to get to know every patient as a whole person. He wants to know about your family, your pets, your work, how you like to spend your time, what you are all about, and what matters to you so that you can work together to develop a treatment plan that is consistent with your goals and values. He is proud to practice at one of the world’s top hospitals, where he gets to be part of a large and dedicated team focused on delivering the state-of-the-art patient-centered cancer care.
In addition to caring for patients he is also a cancer researcher focused on understanding exactly what kind of cancer treatments work best for patients. Some of his research has influenced how gynecologic oncologists treat cervical and ovarian cancer and has been published in important medical journals, like the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, and Journal of Clinical Oncology.
Dr. Melamed was born in Kyiv, Ukraine, and grew up in the US. He majored in chemical biology at the University of California at Berkeley and studied medicine and public health at the University of Southern California. He completed residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology and a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital.
When he is not working, he enjoys playing with his toddler son, preschooler daughter, and 6-year-old puppy. He enjoys cooking, playing guitar, and listening to live music.

Research
My research focuses on increasing understanding of how surgical care impacts the lives of cancer patients. I am interested in methods that allow researchers to draw meaningful insights from observational data. My work explores how focusing on temporal and spatial variation in practice can help to uncover how cancer treatments affect patient outcomes.

I am happy with my treatment at Mass General.
I have been seeing Dr Melamed for over a year. He has performed 2 surgeries and been very caring and kind. Dr Melamed takes the time needed to listen and make sure he has all the facts of your care and how you are feeling. If there is something that needs urgent attention, he checks to make sure that it has been taken care of. Dr Melamed is always ... Read More
