About Todd Francone, MD
Todd D. Francone, MD MPH is a board certified colorectal surgeon at MGH and an Asst Professor of Surgery at Tufts Medical School. His clinical interests include surgical treatment of colorectal malignancies, diverticulitis and inflammatory bowel diseases. He provides treatment options through robotics, endoscopic procedures and other minimally invasive techniques.
Dr. Francone earned his medical degree from Upstate Medical Univ in Syracuse, New York and completed his general surgery residency at NYP-Weill Cornell Medical Center. He completed his fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at Lahey Clinic in addition to a clinical colorectal oncology research fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
Prior to joining MGH, Dr. Francone served as Asst Professor for Surgery and Oncology at the Univ of Rochester Medical Center where he also obtained a master’s degree in public health. From there, he returned to Lahey Hospital & Medical Center to serve as Director for Robotic Colorectal Surgery as well as Program Director of the Colon and Rectal Surgery Residency Program. He also served as an instructor in medicine at Tufts Medical School.
Dr. Francone has a broad experience treating benign and malignant colorectal pathology particularly inflammatory bowel disease and cancer. His clinical expertise includes organ-preserving techniques especially as they are applied to rectal cancer such as Transanal Endoscopic Surgery (TES) including Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery (TEMS) and Transanal Minimally Invasive Surgery (TAMIS). His expertise also includes advanced minimally invasive surgery including robotic-assisted laparoscopy, single-incision (SILS) and multi-port laparoscopic colectomy, Transanal Total Mesorectal Excision (taTME) and natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES). He has special interests in the geriatric population including pre-operative risk assessment and multidisciplinary care in the elderly.
