About Kevin Emerick, MD
Specializing in treating patients with head and neck tumors, Dr. Kevin Emerick is an accomplished head and neck surgeon. His clinical interests include head and neck cancer, advanced and high-risk cutaneous malignancy, sentinel lymph node biopsy, microvascular reconstruction, and pedicled flap reconstruction.
Dr. Emerick has been involved in the creation of the Mass. Eye and Ear/Mass General Cutaneous Oncology Center. This is a multidisciplinary group focused on providing the highest level of clinical care for patients with advanced skin cancers. Additionally, it provides a foundation for important research and patient education.
Throughout his career, Dr. Emerick been an invited speaker at regional and national meetings and has published more than 40 peer-reviewed papers and several textbook chapters. He also dedicates a portion of his time to advising and mentoring residents and fellows.

Research
Dr. Emerick is involved in several areas of clinical research. He is the site PI for multiple multi-site research efforts focusing on clinical outcomes from head and neck cancer treatments and reconstruction following head and neck surgery.
Dr. Emerick is studying methods of improving the technique of sentinel lymph node biopsy in the head and neck region. This includes studying the utility of SPECT CT imaging preoperatively as well as intraoperative techniques to improve the diagnostic accuracy and safety for this procedure. He is also engaged in research to better understand the apparent increased lethality of head and neck cutaneous melanoma.
Lastly, Dr. Emerick works in collaboration with the Laboratory of Quantitative Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. Current work involves creating a web-based outcomes calculator to predict outcomes of head and neck cancers. This research will further increase our understanding of the significance of specific clinicopathologic features and how they impact survival.
