Special Investigations Unit (SIU)
Who We Are
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is a team of highly trained investigators responsible for conducting criminal and non-criminal investigations and acting as a liaison with local, state and federal law enforcement.
Investigators have been instrumental in developing several initiatives to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the Mass General community, including opioid education and narcotics diversion investigations, executive protection planning, crime trending, intelligence gathering and counter culture bulletins designed to mitigate any potential threats.
SIU plays an integral part in maintaining zero ignorance of workplace conflict or violence. As such, SIU is active in numerous hospital-wide programs, such as the MGH Domestic Violence Working Group, MGH Men Against Abuse, the Workplace Violence Committee, and the Strategic Management Assessment and Response Team (SMART). SIU provides frequent trainings to the Mass General community to ensure the population not only experiences security education but also becomes aware of the resources SIU provides.
SIU provides service and expert investigations in a variety of complex and sensitive situations. These intricate cases include investigations of assault and battery, threats and harassments, intimidation, identity theft, larceny, embezzlement and more.
SIU receives cases in a variety of ways. Many investigations are initiated through direct reporting to SIU from operational reports, requests from outside agencies, Human Resources and department leadership from various other departments throughout Massachusetts General Hospital and Mass General Brigham. An investigation may require weeks of forensic review of documents, interviews and lengthy reviews of camera footage
SIU maintains a strong working relationship with the Boston Regional Intelligence Center (BRIC), the Massachusetts State Police, the Boston Police, numerous other local police departments and various federal law enforcement agencies. These collaborations ensure a cohesive approach to resolving investigations and ensuring optimal positive outcomes.
