Maria Avila-Wallace, NP, is a bilingual women’s health and gynecologic oncology nurse practitioner in the Cancer Center at Massachusetts General Hospital. As an expert colposcopist, her interests include screening women for premalignant conditions of the gynecologic tract, along with evaluation, diagnosis and management of those conditions. In addition, she enjoys caring for and educating adult women of all backgrounds in areas of contraception, hormonal changes, sexual dysfunction and menopause (both surgical and natural). She also shares the care of women with gynecologic malignancies with all attending physicians in the practice.
Maria completed a pre-med degree from the University of Puerto Rico, a bachelor of science in nursing degree from Salem State College and her master’s degree and women’s health nurse practitioner’s certification from the MGH Institute of Health Professions. Her certification for colposcopy of the lower genital tract was obtained from Emory School of Medicine after academics and a year-long clinical preceptorship under the American Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology. She has over 13 years’ experience and has assisted in the training of some of her colleagues. In addition, she participates in the formation of new nurse practitioner students interested in caring for women with complex gynecological and oncologic conditions.
