After a 2-year hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic, snacks have returned in the patient lounge at the Concierge Medicine Practice and Executive Health Practice at Massachusetts General Hospital.

As the registered dietitian on staff, Alison Kane, RDN, LDN, curated a selection of snacks that fits our patients’ palette preferences and diverse dietary needs.

When choosing which snacks to offer, she focused primarily on minimally processed, whole food ingredients that pack the most nutrient density. She made sure every ingredient on the label was recognizable with no artificial ingredients and limited sodium and added sugar.

“I wanted to make sure not only food allergies or intolerances were accounted for, but also our patients’ individual dietary preferences such as plant-based, gluten-free, or paleo were taken into consideration,” says Kane.

There is now a variety of sweet, savory, cold and warm snacks and beverages available in the patient lounge. Take a look below at some of the snack options:

Vegan Options
  • Fresh fruit
  • Nut butter squeeze packs
  • Dried fruit and mixed nut trail mix
  • Dried mango

High Protein Options
  • Plant-based protein bars
  • Grass-fed beef jerky sticks
  • Low sugar, high protein Icelandic skyr yogurts

All the snacks are gluten free. In addition to snacks, the patient lounge offers bottled water, flavored seltzer waters, and a variety of teas and coffees that patients can help themselves to between appointments.
