About Marcy Bolster, MD
Dr. Marcy B. Bolster is Director, Rheumatology Fellowship Training Program at MGH. She has been a rheumatology fellowship program director since 1999, initially at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC; 1999-2012) and subsequently at MGH (2012-current).
With a strong interest in medical education, Dr. Bolster participates in the teaching and training of medical students, internal medicine residents and rheumatology fellows. She has been the recipient of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) Distinguished Program Director Award (2019) and was named the Mass General Brigham Program Director of the Year (2020). Among other medical education endeavors at MGH, Dr. Bolster is a member, Women in Medicine Trainees Council, an initiative to support professional development for women trainees and young faculty members through mentorship. She is a member of several MGH education committees and has teaching roles at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Bolster has demonstrated leadership in several projects within the ACR. She served as Chair, Committee on Training and Workforce (2012-2015) and in this role contributed to the 2015 Workforce Study. She participated in the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Milestones project and the ACGME Rheumatology Milestones 2.0. She led the ACR development of the Rheumatology Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs), Rheumatology Curricular Milestones, and updated Rheumatology Fellowship Core Curriculum (2012-2015). Dr. Bolster has held leadership roles with the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) as Member, Rheumatology Board (2009-2014), followed by Chair, ABIM Rheumatology Exam Committee (2014-2018); Chair, ABIM Rheumatology Board (2014-2020); and Member, ABIM Council (2014-2020). She is committed to facing the gaps in the rheumatology workforce and is the recipient of a Rheumatology Research Foundation (RRF) Clinician Scholar Educator grant, "Extending Our Reach" providing telemedicine training to rheumatology fellows to provide care to underserved patient populations.
Her clinical interests include general rheumatology, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, and scleroderma. She is the medical lead for the MGH Fracture Liaison Service, an interdisciplinary service with focus on the management of patients with osteoporosis who have had a fragility fracture.
