Learn About the Faculty of the Internal Medicine Residency Program

Our Faculty

The Department of Medicine Internal Medicine Residency Program provides educational opportunities for residents that draw from the expertise of hundreds of active clinicians, physician-scientists and investigators. We have robust systems in place to connect residents with faculty who provide educational support, academic advising, mentorship, coaching and collaborate to pursue scholarly work. The strength of the program draws from the significant diversity of faculty. Our Directors and APDs are always innovating to ensure we provide an outstanding educational experience. Our firm system, led by the Firm Chiefs, provides academic advising, mentorship, and both a social and clinical home. Our Chief Residents support you both personally and professionally. And the Inpatient Core Educator faculty supervise, teach and innovate on the Bigelow and Flex teaching service.

Chief Residents

Our chief residents are graduates of the Massachusetts General Hospital Internal Medicine Residency Program. Our four chief residents return to the residency program 1-2 years after graduation with experience in general ambulatory, hospital medicine or subspecialty training prior to serving in this leadership role. This additional training provides the chief residents with educational experiences that enhance their teaching and leadership. Three chief residents primarily serve to support the categorical and preliminary programs, and one ambulatory chief resident focuses on outpatient training and the Primary Care Program.

Firm Chiefs

The Massachusetts General Hospital firm system was established almost 25 years ago to enhance the quality of clinical teaching and build mentoring relationships. The system is named for former Mass General Chiefs of Medicine: James Howard Means, Walter Bauer and James Jackson. Firm activities include conferences, socials and one-on-one academic advising and career guidance. The firm chiefs help advise on career development, write letters of recommendation and are part of the support structure in of the program. The firm system is embedded in the Bigelow/Flex general medicine floors so that residents will work with a cohort of faculty and their Firm Chief when on service.
