Lisa Bebell, MD, MSc (2023-24 AK Scholar), was elected as a 2023 Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) Fellow, recognizing her professional excellence in the field of infectious diseases
Erin Tracy Bradley, MD (2023-24 AK Scholar), was appointed Chair of District I and member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Board of Directors
Nina B. Gold, MD (2023-24 AK Scholar), is the recipient of the inaugural David Holtzman award at MGH, given to "someone who embodies the values of David Holtzman: science, medicine, innovation, compassion."
Susan R. Hata, MD (2023-24 AK Scholar), received the 2024 Medicine-Pediatrics Program Director Association (MPPDA) Brendan P. Kelly, MD, Award, presented to an Associate Program Director of a Medicine-Pediatrics Residency Program who demonstrates the teaching excellence, collaborative leadership, and compassionate patient care that Dr. Kelly modeled so well.
Amy Ly, MD (2023-24 AK Scholar), has been selected for the Harvard Macy Institute’s Art Museum-based Health Professions Education Fellowship, presented in partnership with the Center for Visual Arts in Healthcare at Brigham & Women’s Hospital and the Harvard Macy Institute. She was also awarded the 2024 Yolanda Oertel Interventional Cytopathologist Award by the Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology.
Karen C. Nanji, MD, MPH (2023-24 AK Scholar), Department of Anesthesia, won first place in the American Medical Informatics Association’s 2023 Health Level 7 Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) Competition for her real-time perioperative medication safety software platform, GuidedOR. This award recognizes the best and most innovative software applications in real-world practice that use FHIR to access health-related data. GuidedOR has been shown to improve quality of care and clinician workflow efficiency while reducing the cost of care.
Esther Rheinbay, PhD (2023-24 AK Scholar), received the 2024 MGH ECOR Martin Research Prize for Fundamental (Basic) Research and a 2024 Women Scientists Innovation Award for Cancer Research, the V Scholar Award.
Alexandra Touroutoglu, MSc, PhD (2023-24 AK Scholar), received the 2023 MGH CFD Rising Mentor Award. She also received the 2023 Science and Technology Award, Greek International Women Awards. These awards “celebrate, empower, and recognize the incredible and influential leading Greek women whose stories are making an impact in the world that we live in.”
Jia Yin, MD, PhD, MPH (2023-24 AK Scholar), cornea specialist, Department of Ophthalmology, received the Research to Prevent Blindness Physician-Scientist Award. This award provides funding to promote the clinical and basic science research of clinicians. It will support Yin’s research on the relationship between blood vessels and sensory nerves in the cornea.

The New England Revolution honored Mary Alexis Iaccarino, MD (2021-22 AK Scholar) as a "Hero of the Match" on Concussion Awareness Night, 2022.Leah Rosenberg, MD (2021-22 AK Scholar), attending physician, Palliative Care and Geriatric Medicine, received the Mark Eisenberg Award for Excellence in Mentoring. This award is named after Mark Eisenberg, MD, a primary care physician at MGH Charlestown devoted to working with marginalized communities to meet their needs and provide responsive and respectful care. It is given to an exceptional Department of Medicine clinical mentor whose first faculty appointment occurred no more than 10 years ago.
Shan Liu, MD, SD (2021-22 AK Scholar), Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at HMS, was awarded the Stepping Strong grant and the Silver Birch ACEP award, in recognition of excellence in service to geriatric emergency medicine.
Christiane Wrann, PhD, DVM (2021-22 AK Scholar), leader of the Program in Neuroprotection in Exercise at the MGH, received the 2022 Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF)-Harrington Scholar Award. This award provides funding and project support by a team of pharmaceutical industry experts through a collaboration with the ADDF and Harrington Discovery Institute. The ADDF-Harrington Scholar Program is dedicated to advancing academic discoveries into medicines for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.
Gabriela Apiou, PhD (2020-21 AK scholar), was recognized as the inaugural incumbent of the Endowed MGH Research Institute Chair in Translational Sciences—and for her unique vision for academia-industry collaboration. Manisha Bahl, MD, MPH, FSBI (2020-21 AK Scholar), Department of Radiology, received the 2024 Women's Health Research Award from the Massachusetts Medical Society. This award recognizes a physician for outstanding contributions to advancing women's health research in Massachusetts.
Genevieve Boland, MD, PhD (2020-21 AK Scholar), Vice Chair of Research in the MGH Department of Surgery, received a 2022 Martin Research Prize from the MGH Executive Committee on Research for her publication, "Evolution of delayed resistance to immunotherapy in a melanoma responder".
Sherri-Ann Burnett-Bowie, MD, MPH (2020-21 AK Scholar), was recently promoted to Physician at Mass General and as of November 1, 2022, the CDI Associate Director assumed a position as the Internal Medicine residency program Firm Chief. She also received the 2023 HMS Program Award for Culture of Excellence in Mentoring for Fostering Diversity in HIV Research Program.
Laura E. Dichtel, MD, MHS (2020-21 AK Scholar), MGH Neuroendocrine Unit, and director, Faculty Parental Wellness Program, received the 2023 Women in Medicine Summit Trailblazer Award for her work developing parental wellness programming at MGH. This award recognizes women who have made significant contributions to improve the careers of fellow woman physicians.
Jessica Haberer, MD, MS (2020-21 AK Scholar), received the 2023 HMS Program Award for Culture of Excellence in Mentoring for Fostering Diversity in HIV Research Program.
Rachel Jimenez, MD (2020-21 AK Scholar), chair, Quality and Safety, Radiation Oncology, was named editor-in-chief of Advances in Radiation Oncology by the American Society for Radiation Oncology. Jimenez plans to emphasize the “Advances” aspect of the journal’s name by focusing on evolving technologies in the field while highlighting the biological advances that keep radiation oncology on the cutting edge of cancer research.
Elizabeth Lawson, MD, MMSc (2020-21 AK Scholar), clinician in the MGH Neuroendocrine Clinical Center and faculty member in the Neuroendocrine Unit, received a 2022 A. Clifford Barger Mentoring Award from the HMS Office for Diversity Inclusion and Community Partnership.
Elaine Yu, MD, MMSc (2020-21 AK Scholar), Chen Institute MGH Research Scholar 2023-2028, Endocrine Unit, received the 2023 Early Clinical Investigator Award Honoring Robert Marcus, MD, from the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research. This award recognizes meritorious clinical research in the bone, mineral and musculoskeletal field.
Fatima Cody Stanford, MD, MPH, MPA, MBA, FAAP, FACP, FAHA, FAMWA, FTOS (2020-21 AK Scholar), was exclusively interviewed on January 1, 2023 as one of the medical experts in a "60 Minutes" segment on the struggle to obtain obesity medication for patients who need it. She also played a prominent role in Oprah's "The State of Weight" conversation, broadcast on September 20, 2023. Congratulations to Dr. Stanford on participating in these highly visible opportunities to advocate on behalf of patients.
Fatima also received the following awards in 2022:
- The Dr. Anthony E. Karpas Memorial Lecture Award from the Georgia Society of Endocrinology. Awardees are selected for annual award based upon commitment to equity and education about obesity named in honor of the 1st president of the society.
- The Memorial Lecture Award from the Department of Nutrition Federal University of Santa Catarina- Florianopolis, Brazil. Awardees are selected for inspiring, making more effective health professionals, and promoting international research collaboration.
- The Scholar in Diagnostic Excellence Award from the National Academies of Medicine (NAM). Awardees are selected as an exceptional individual interested in focusing on diagnosis-related work from a broad range of disciplines and professions.
- Selected as a Top 100 under 50 Emerging Leaders Award from Diversity MBA, for her impact on leadership based upon her position within her company, scope of responsibility, civic achievement, and the advanced degree held.
These AK scholars have each received nominations for the 2024 Claflin Distinguished Scholar Award from the MGH Executive Committee on Research. This award helps facilitate the academic careers of women in science at MGH and increases opportunities for women to advance to senior positions in academic medicine.
