Mitigating Anesthesia’s Impact on the Environment
This webinar provided a presentation of factors within the practice of anesthesia that impact the environment and the sustainability priorities that can be employed to mitigate them.
Dr. Samuel Smith completed his anesthesia training at Mass General in 2004 after receiving his MD and MPH with an emphasis in environmental and occupational health at the University of Utah School of Medicine in 2000. After residency, he worked in the private sector dedicated to clinical anesthesia care for 15 years, most recently serving as an anesthesia group president in Santa Barbara, California.
Since Dr. Smith’s return to Mass General in 2019, he has focused his academic efforts on clinical innovation, design, and sustainability. He is also heavily involved in clinical care for various services at Mass General and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and is an instructor of anesthesia at Harvard Medical School. He also currently serves as an associate of the MGH Center for the Environment and Health and is the principal investigator at the Mass General Brigham Health Design Lab, where architects, engineers, and clinicians collaborate on research targeted at addressing ways in which the design of the built environment impacts human health.
Dr. Smith has been awarded several grants since returning to Mass General Brigham to work on innovation in health care technology related to improving the quality of patient care.
