Carrying on the legacy of Latino service
In 2005, Ernesto González, MD, MGH dermatologist, received the inaugural award recognizing his outstanding service to the Latino community and beyond. On Oct. 16, the newest honorees were celebrated.
Born in Guatemala and raised in Mexico, I graduated medical school with honors from the Monterrey Institute of Technology. After conducting clinical research at Baylor College of Medicine, I trained at MGH/BWH/Harvard completing a Medicine internship, Neurology residency, Movement Disorders fellowship, Master degree of Public Health, postdoctoral fellowships in Neurostatistics & Neuroepidemiology and Mental Health Policy, and the Physician Leadership Development Certificate Program. I also graduated the DSC Disparities Leadership Program, YW Boston LeadBoston Executive Leadership Program, and AAN Diversity Leadership Program.
I work to advance equity through patient care, research, education, and administration. I lead the MGH Neurology Diversity Committee; am part of the MGH Executive Committee of Community Health and MGH Diversity Committee; Member of the Board of Directors of Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program; Associate of the Disparities Solutions Center; and Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology. My work has been recognized with the HMS Harold Amos Faculty Diversity, Boston YMCA Achievers, Dominican Medical College New England & Hispanic Health Professionals Association Outstanding Healthcare Professional, MGH Service Excellence Leadership Honorable Mention, MGH Ernesto Gonzalez, HMS Scholars in Medicine Excellence in Student Mentoring, and the AAN AB Baker Teacher Recognition awards.

Funding from the American Academy of Neurology, Rappaport Foundation, National Parkinson Foundation, National Institutes of Health, and philanthropic gifts have allowed me to characterize ways to improve neurology care for racial and linguistic minority populations. My publications are in the Journal of the American Heart Association, Neurology, Movement Disorders, and other peer-reviewed journals. I have also disseminated my work through invited grand rounds, CME courses, and presentations at the American Academy of Neurology Annual Meeting, the American Neurological Association Annual Meeting, the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society International Congress, and the Physicians for a National Health Program Annual Meeting.
I have created mechanisms for trainees to develop academic projects focused on neurologic health equity, including the Mass General Brigham Neurology Residency Program Certificate in Diversity and Inclusion for neurology residents, the MGH Neurology Community Health Diversity and Inclusion Internship for undergraduate and graduate students, and the MGH Neurology Youth Stroke Education program for high school students. My mentees have published first-author manuscripts, presented their research in national forums, and been recognized with American Academy of Neurology Diversity Scholars, Fulbright Scholars, and Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars awards.
