About Matthew Gardiner, MD
Dr. Matthew Gardiner serves as Director of the Ophthalmology Emergency, Consult, and Hospitalist Services and is a member of the Comprehensive Ophthalmology and Cataract Consultation Service at Mass. Eye and Ear, where he provides a wide range of eye care from routine exams to management of complex ophthalmic diseases. His primary interests are anterior segment surgery and emergency ophthalmology.
Dr. Gardiner obtained his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He then completed two residencies-one in internal medicine and another in ophthalmology-before completing a fellowship in anterior segment disease at Mass. Eye and Ear.
As a clinician educator, Dr. Gardiner teaches and trains residents and medical students, both in outpatient clinics and in the operating room. Notably, he has been selected twice as Teacher of the Year-an honor bestowed to him by ophthalmology residents, reflecting his outstanding efforts in medical education. He also speaks locally and to the lay press about the importance of laser safety, night driving safety, and eye strain and computer use, and has published several book chapters, including one entitled "Corneal and Scleral Lacerations."

Research
Dr. Gardiner is interested in anterior segment surgery and emergency ophthalmology. With a particular interest in eye trauma and anterior segment reconstruction following eye injuries, he spends time writing as well as speaking locally and to the lay press about the importance of eye protection and safety. He works closely with the other departments of Mass. Eye and Ear to create guidelines for trainees and consultants with regard to their roles the Emergency Department. He has won the Teacher of the Year award twice.
