About Cori Cather, PhD
Dr. Corinne Cather is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Harvard Medical School and the Director of the Center of Excellence for Psychosocial and Systemic Research at the Massachusetts General Hospital Schizophrenia Program in Boston. Dr. Cather earned her undergraduate degree in biopsychology at Hamilton College in Clinton, NY and her doctorate in clinical psychology from Rutgers University where she received specialized training in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and behavioral medicine. She completed an internship at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and joined the Schizophrenia Clinical and Research Program as a post-doctoral fellow in 1999. She holds a diplomate in cognitive therapy from the Academy of Cognitive Therapy.
Clinical and Research interests
Dr. Cather is a clinician-researcher with training in behavioral medicine and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). She is one of the clinical psychologists who provides team-based care to patients and family members in the MGH First Episode and Early Psychosis Program. As part of a team, she provides consultations to patients and families dealing with psychosis.
She has extensive experience as a clinician-researcher in both first episode/early psychosis and chronic schizophrenia and she has developed an international reputation as one of the few practitioners in the US to provide training in cognitive behavioral therapy in schizophrenia. She also currently consults to agencies in United States and Canada to provide training and consultation in coordinated specialty care for first episode psychosis, an evidence-based practice evaluated the NIMH RAISE NAVIGATE project.
Her research has focused on psychosocial interventions to promote physical health, improve functioning, and decrease distress in individuals with first episode and early psychosis as well as in those with longer histories of mental health challenges. She has developed evidence-based smoking cessation interventions and has more recently become interested in improving diabetes self-management skills among individuals with mental health challenges who also have diabetes.

Research
Dr. Cather's research interests include the development and implementation of CBT to residual symptoms, medication adherence, and substance use disorders in individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Her group was the lead site for the first randomized controlled trial of CBT in schizophrenia published in the United States. She has authored several manualized treatment protocols for increasing readiness to quit smoking, smoking cessation, and smoking relapse prevention that are based on cognitive-behavioral and motivational enhancement principles for smokers with severe mental illness diagnoses and has trained interventionists across the US to deliver these treatments with high fidelity to the model.
