About Carlos Fernandez-del Castillo, MD

Dr. Carlos Fernandez-del Castillo is a gastrointestinal surgeon specialized in pancreatic and biliary diseases.

Dr. Fernandez-del Castillo is the director of the pancreas and biliary surgery program and clinical co-director of the GI cancer center at the MGH, as well as professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School. He is a widely recognized expert in pancreatic and biliary surgery, and has authored over 350 publications on pancreatic cancer, cystic tumors of the pancreas, Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMN), neuroendocrine pancreatic tumors, acute and chronic pancreatitis. For several years he has performed the largest number of pancreatic resections in New England.  He serves in the editorial board many journals, including Annals of Surgery and Pancreatology, and is a past president of the American Pancreatic Association.

Dr. Fernandez-del Castillo has laboratory and clinical research focused on pathogenesis of acute pancreatitis, models of pancreatic cancer, molecular genetics of pancreatic cancer and cystic neoplasms of the pancreas, and neuroendocrine tumors.
