What is a dermatopathologist?
A dermatopathologist is a medical doctor who specializes in dermatology and pathology. A dermatopathologist examines samples of skin, hair, nails, or mouth under a microscope to diagnosis your condition. Visit the American Academy of Dermatology or the American Society of Dermatopathology to learn more about this specialty. Most pathology work is done in a laboratory.

Fees for laboratory services are not billed through your doctor’s office or hospital. Fees are billed directly to your insurance company through the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization (MGPO). In every case, MGPO Dermatopathology Associates will do everything in our power to resolve your claim with your insurance company without contacting you. Our goal is to make this process as seamless and convenient for you as possible. Due to this fact, you may not receive an initial bill from MGPO Dermatopathology Associates until we have exhausted all options—this may be four or five months after the date of your procedure.
Why did I receive a bill from Massachusetts General Physician Organization Dermatopathology Associates?
As part of your medical care, your doctor removed a tiny tissue sample during an office visit and sent the tissue to MGPO Dermatopathology Associates for expert microscopic evaluation. Our lab processed and analyzed your specimen and our dermatopathologists sent a written pathology report to your doctor. This separate laboratory fee is not billed through your doctor’s office. Our laboratory will bill your insurance company directly for services.
What should I do with the bill I received from MGPO Dermatopathology Associates?
In most cases, if you received a bill from MGPO Dermatopathology Associates, you owe a co-payment, deductible, or other additional payment required by your insurance company. If you have any questions or concerns about the bill, we recommend contacting your insurance provider or referring to your insurance policy.
You may also have received a bill from MGPO Dermatopathology Associates because we were given incorrect or no insurance information. In this case, you may have received a bill for the full amount of MGPO Dermatopathology Associates services. Please contact MGPO Dermatopathology Associates billing department in this event and ensure that we have the correct insurance billing information. If we did not initially have the correct information, we will re-submit the claim with the revised information.
I received a bill but currently have no medical insurance. What should I do?
As a recipient of testing services, you are responsible for the bill that has been sent to you. MGPO Dermatopathology Associates will work with you to establish reasonable payment arrangements. Please contact our billing department at 855-644-3376 to arrange for payment of your bill.
I received a bill from MGPO Dermatopathology Associates; however, I believe I satisfied my annual deductible. What should I do?
Please contact your insurance company to ensure the claim has been processed correctly according to your benefits. If it has not, please work with your insurance company to correct the payment of the claim.
