Founded in 1992 by Nancy Rigotti, MD, and based in the Department of Medicine (Division of General Internal Medicine and the Mongan Institute Health Policy Center) at Massachusetts General Hospital, the Tobacco Research & Treatment Center (TRTC) consists of a multidisciplinary team of physicians, social and behavioral scientists, nurses, social workers and research staff.
The TRTC uses an externally-funded research group that conducts projects to identify and implement effective tobacco cessation interventions in various health care settings. Primarily using randomized controlled trials, investigators associated with the Center have tested smoking cessation interventions for hospitalized smokers and for smokers in outpatient adult and pediatric primary care, prenatal care, oncology, and psychiatric practices. Investigators also study the effectiveness of tobacco control policy efforts.
