Support Available for Kidney Transplant Patients

Counseling, Support, and Chaplaincy Services

Most renal recipients look forward to their transplant as a relief from the problems of dialysis. Likewise liver and pancreas recipients look forward to renewed energy and better functioning. Indeed, many people experience a euphoria when their new organ begins to work. This feeling was described by one patient as a "return to freedom."

In spite of these good feelings, people also may find the adjustment to their new organ more difficult than they had anticipated. Physical and emotional changes from the immunosuppression, concerns about the donor of the organ, or perhaps fears about rejection, or the recuperation process may arise to trouble you. You may find yourself concerned about a fellow transplant patient whose graft has failed or sad about a death of another patient, even when that person’s illness was unrelated to yours. Family changes and adjustment to the transplantation may also be of concern.

These concerns and the anxiety or depression that accompanies them can interfere with the quality of your life in the post- transplant period. This may affect your ability to work with the Transplant Team.

If you experience these or other worries, it is important for you to know that resources are available. Feel free to discuss your concerns with your primary nurse or a physician. They can put you in touch with any of the following people.

Psychiatrist

Consultation is available to review special concerns or adjustments to your new organ. A visit with the psychiatrist may include instruction in relaxation techniques, use of appropriate medications, or just the opportunity to talk.

Chaplain Services

Chaplain Services for most denominations are available on the Transplant Unit. You may request to see a chaplain either before or after your surgery, or anytime during your stay. Catholic patients may arrange for communion at their bedside. The hospital chapel is located on the first floor of the Ellison Building and is open day and night for patients, family, and visitors. Times of services are posted on the door.

Clinical Social Worker

There are social worker available to transplant patients, for support or for guidance with resources available after transplantation.
