Kidney Transplant Procedure

When a suitable donor offer is made for you, you will also receive special instructions about what to do and how to get admitted to the hospital. You will be also be given specific instructions about when you need to stop eating and drinking (NPO). We'll also remind you only to bring personal hygiene items along with loose, comfortable clothing to wear home when you are discharged.

When you arrive at the hospital go directly to the Transplant Unit. Do not go to the Emergency Room or Admitting Department. The nurses on the Transplant Unit will know that you are coming and will be expecting you. (See directions.)

Once you are on the Transplant Unit, you'll still be NPO. A nurse will greet you and take your vital signs and weight. A doctor will be there to give you a physical examination. Blood tests will be drawn and sent to the laboratory. You'll also be asked to sign consent forms for anesthesia, blood transfusions, surgery, and studies of innovative therapies.

Right before you go to the operating room, you'll have a chest x-ray and EKG. Finally, you will be given a sedative to relax you prior to surgery.
