Becoming a Kidney Donor

Kidney transplantation involves placing a donor’s kidney into a recipient. It is a treatment for patients who have end-stage renal disease.

Living donations can be made by very healthy friends or family if their tissue is compatible with yours. Potential donors undergo testing and evaluations similar to that of the intended recipient. More information on organ donation can by found at Donate Life America, sponsored by the United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS).

For some people, receiving a living donation may not be an option. In these cases, patients are placed on the waiting list run by UNOS.
