Instructions for your child after Cystoscopy

What to Expect:

  • Your child’s urine will be pink or red for 2-3 days after the procedure.
  • Call the doctor if the urine stays pink or red for longer that 1 week.
  • When the child urinates it will be uncomfortable.  To help with this the child may sit in a tub of warm water to urinate.  This will make them more comfortable.

Bath:

  • Use a mild soap such as Ivory®.
  • Do not use perfumed soaps or bubble bath in tub baths.

Special Instructions for Girls:

  • Please instruct girls to wipe from front to back to prevent bacteria from entering the urinary tract.

Activity:

Today:

  • Your child should rest quietly for the next 24 hours or have quiet supervised play.
  • Your child may be unsteady on his/her feet.
  • Naps may be off schedule today. They may be longer or shorter than usual.

After today:

  • Your child’s activity can be as it was before surgery unless restricted by your physician.

Diet:

  • Your child may eat or drink as usual.
  • If vomiting occurs, do not give your child anything to eat or drink for 2 hours.   Then offer small amounts of clear liquids, half strength formula or half strength juice until your child does not vomit any more. Then slowly start on their normal diet.

Pain:

  • Your child may have a prescription for Pyridium for discomfort.  Your child’s urine may appear orange.
  • Your child may take Tylenol® (acetaminophen) or Motrin® (ibuprofen) for discomfort if the pain is mild.
