How to Transfer or Transport a Patient

print page content

Emergency Transfers

Emergency transfers are facilitated by the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (617-724-HELP [4357]) and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (617-724-4310). If you have any questions about the stability of a patient, specialists will help with triage decisions.

Transfer of Stable Patients

To transfer a stable patient not requiring emergent care, simply contact the pediatric hospitalist on call by calling the page operator (617-726-2000) and requesting pager number 21900. The hospitalist will assist with triage decisions and facilitate transfer to MassGeneral Hospital for Children.

Twenty-Four-Hour Access to Pediatric Specialists

Our Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Transport programs provide twenty-four-hour access to our NICU and PICU. Our current transport team consists of a senior level ICU physician and a neonatal transport nurse. Special services available in the intensive care units include nitric oxide, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and a full complement of pediatric surgical subspecialties.

Boston MedFlight

We also coordinate trauma and other emergent transports with Boston MedFlight, providing helicopter services from all over central New England directly to the helipad at MassGeneral Hospital for Children.
