MassGeneral Hospital for Children provides an import resource for the education of medical students. Students come for their core clerkship in pediatrics, sub internship in pediatrics, and electives in pediatric subspecialties. All education experiences are coordinated under the guidance of Harvard Medical School.
Core Clerkship in Pediatrics
Course Number IN550M.3BIn this course, third-year students familiarize themselves with indicators of health and disease by becoming involved in the clinical management of infants, children, and adolescents. Students participate in all aspects of patient care—work rounds, visit rounds, admissions, as well as in various educational offerings. This clerkship ordinarily includes four weeks of pediatric wards and two weeks in the pediatric emergency room, general pediatric outpatient settings, and newborn nursery. Acquisition of clinical skills and approaches to patient management are emphasized. All core clerkships in pediatrics also now participate in a common lecture series during Friday afternoons of the rotation. These lectures take place at either the Harvard Medical School or Massachusetts General Hospital. For more information, see the Harvard Medical School Course Listings.
Sub Internship in Pediatrics/Advanced Pediatrics
Course number PD501M.3This is an advanced pediatric clerkship designed for students who have completed their Core Clerkship in Pediatrics and who desire a more intensive experience with increased responsibility in the management of pediatric patients. The student functions as an extern and admits and manages patients as a part of the ward team under the supervision of senior residents and attending physicians. At night, the student shares responsibility with the ward team for providing coverage for all ward patients. The student attends daily teaching conferences and radiology rounds with their ward team. By request, experiences can be arranged in a newborn nursery setting and in general pediatric and subspecialty outpatient settings. The goal of this clerkship is to provide an opportunity to strengthen skills in the evaluation and management of pediatric patients. For more information, see the Harvard Medical School Course Listings.
