In partnership with hospital administrators and staff, the Family Advisory Council has influenced the way care is delivered in every area of the hospital. The following is a small sampling of the results of that collaboration:
- Produced a teaching video that demonstrates how a parent/physician dialogue is improved by incorporating Family-Centered Care (FCC) principles.
- Conducted teaching sessions for residents in which parents explained principles of FCC and shared stories illustrating their experiences of care.
- Provided family perspectives on how to improve pain management of children in the Massachusetts General Hospital Emergency Department.
- Participated in the design of an Emergency Department-based pain study.
- Made recommendations regarding the design of the new Pediatric Emergency Department.
- Advised the team renovating the Pediatric Family Lounge on designs that would be the most family friendly.
- Participated in Quality/Safety Grand Rounds & Palliative Care Grand Rounds, explaining how providers can improve the care experience for families.
- Expanded its membership in order to include more family representation on a broader range of pediatrics committees, including:
- Pediatric Pain Subcommittee
- MGHfC Quality & Safety Committee
- Transitions Committee
- Ethics Committee
- Pediatric Endoscopy Planning Committee
- Pediatric Quality & Safety "Speak Up" Subcommittee
- Pediatric Guide Book Advisory Group
- Safety Initiative for Pedi Patients (SIPPs)
