Head and Neck Cancers
The Center for Head and Neck Cancers at the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center is one of the largest and most experienced centers in New England dedicated exclusively to the evaluation and treatment of patients with cancers of the head and neck, including rare, complex forms of the disease.
About This Program
Our ServicesNew patients are evaluated during a single visit (usually lasting about two to three hours) by the members of his or her healthcare team to develop an optimal treatment plan. Meet our team.

- The latest screening and diagnostic tests, including PET and PET/CT
- Multidisciplinary treatments based on the latest, most effective advances in surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy
- Access to investigational treatments through clinical trials
- Functional rehabilitation
Advanced Treatments
- Chemotherapy and radiation with limited surgery to preserve speech, swallowing, or vision
- Novel forms of radiation, including concurrent chemotherapy and radiation, intensity-modulated radiation therapy, proton beam therapy, brachytherapy, and 3-D conformal radiation therapy
- Sophisticated voice-preserving surgical procedures
- Surgical “free-tissue transfers” to preserve or restore appearance and function
- The latest surgical approaches offering access to previously inaccessible areas, such as the base of the skull
- Novel medical therapies, including hyperbaric oxygen therapy, new cancer-prevention agents, biologic therapy, and gene therapy
- State-of-the-art imaging, including PET and computer-enhanced CT and MRI
Laryngeal Cancer (Cancer of the Larynx)
Laryngeal cancer includes cancerous cells found in any part of the larynx - the glottis, the supraglottis, or the subglottis.
Oral Cancer
Oral cancer is cancer found in the oral cavity (the mouth area) and the oropharynx (the throat area at the back of the mouth).
HOPES Program
The HOPES Program provides free wellness services, plus education and support workshops for patients with cancer, their families and their friends. Our services focus on helping you take care of your whole self – mind, body and spirit.
Maxwell V. Blum Cancer Resource Room
The Maxwell V. Blum Cancer Resource Room at the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center provides cancer patients and their families with information and resources for living with cancer.
Illuminations Program
Illuminations is a rotating art exhibit displayed in the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center. The program aims to enlighten and encourage patients and their loved ones by enhancing our environment of care.
