Can you have metastatic cancer without having a primary?
If the primary cancer is unknown, it is something called Cancer of Unknown Primary (CUP). Cancers of unknown primary are diagnosed because the primary tumor has metastasized or spread.

How do doctors know if a cancer is primary or secondary?
The cancer cells look like the tissue or organ where the original or primary tumor grew. For example, if you have breast cancer and it metastasizes to the bone, you have breast cancer cells in your bones. The cells look like breast cancer cells, not bone cells.

What cancers can metastasize?
All cancers can metastasize. A tumor is a cancer because it can spread from where it started to other parts of the body. Some cancers are more likely to spread than others. Cancers tend to spread to certain places like liver, lung, bone, and brain.
