Lymphatic System - Front View
Lymphatic System - Front View, Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center

  • The Lymphatic System is part of the immune system, which is the body’s system to defend against infections and diseases.
  • Lymph Vessels are thin tubes in a network around the body that drain fluid from the tissues and return it to the bloodstream.
  • Lymph nodes are small bean-shaped tissues that filter lymph fluid and store white blood cells (lymphocytes).  They are located along lymph vessels.
  • Clusters of lymph nodes are found in the neck, underarm, abdomen, pelvis and groin.
  • Cancer cells can travel through lymph vessels and become trapped in lymph nodes.
  • The spleen is an organ in the abdomen behind the stomach.  It filters blood, makes and stores some blood cells, and destroys old blood cells.
