Common Questions for Kids: Toddlers
When The Parent Has Cancer
My toddler gets very upset when I leave to go to the hospital for treatment. What can I do to help my child when I am not with him/her?
Make a photo album. Put pictures of you and your child and other supportive people in the photo album. This way when you are not with your child, there is a reminder of you and your family.

What are some toys that may be helpful during this time?

  • Play doctor's kit
  • Dollhouse with family
  • Blank paper, crayons, and finger paints
  • Anything that talks about feelings

I want to make sure I spend some quality time with my child. Do you have any suggestions?
Reading can be a time of connection. Grab a short snuggle and a story whenever you get the chance. If you feel ill, try a book with a tape. We know that you have many extra demands on your time, so this might not be as possible as often as you would like.

Do you have a list of websites, books, and other resources on helping kids cope?
