The Cancer Center adds new Center for Psychiatric Oncology and Behavioral Sciences
In an effort to improve the mental health and well being of our cancer patients, the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, in collaboration with the Department of Psychiatry, has developed the Center for Psychiatric Oncology and Behavioral Sciences.
Leading the new Center is psychiatrist and clinical director, William Pirl, MD, MPH. In this new position within the Cancer Center, Dr. Pirl assumes administrative responsibilities related to clinical affairs and leads the academic and research mission of the new Center, working closely with the senior psychiatrists who are critical contributors to psychiatric oncology.
The new psychiatric oncology center will focus on three key missions – research, clinical care and education, and will work collaboratively with the PACT program, Social Work and the HOPES program.
Research Mission
The Center will develop a productive research program that incorporates the breadth of psychiatry into interdisciplinary cancer research. This research will include studies that are based primarily in the Center as well as providing behavioral science expertise to other researchers in the Cancer Center.
Clinical Care Mission
The Center will provide a seamless clinical service offering state-of-the-art psychosocial health care for patients at all points of cancer care. Services will include both outpatient and inpatient psychiatry consultations and cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy.
Education Mission
Recognizing the multidisciplinary nature of psychosocial oncology, the Center will be a leading source for the education and training of mental health professionals, oncologists, nurses and trainees. Specifically, two areas of focus are the training of psychiatry residents and involvement in Continuing Medical Education programs on cancer care.
“Our new Center for Psychiatric Oncology and Behavioral Science is committed to creating a cancer care model that is unparalleled in its ability to treat the ‘whole patient’ to foster the best patient experience and clinical outcomes,” states Dr. Pirl. “We also realize the need for high quality research in this field to understand how psychosocial variables and treatment impact medical outcomes and quality of life for cancer patients.”
The new Center will continue its collaboration with the Department of Social Work in regard to the triage and delivery of mental health services, as well as the development of mechanisms to evaluate and screen patients in collaboration with the disease centers and Patient Care Services.
