Howard Ulfelder, MD Healing Garden

The Howard Ulfeder, MD Healing Garden at Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, Boston, MA will provide visitors with a nearby escape from the stresses resulting from illness and the often-bustling, sterile hospital environment. The sights, sounds, and smells of a garden have always provided people with a respite from their troubles and a feeling of serenity and peace, particularly during times of stress.

In recognition of the life-affirming powers of gardens and the importance of providing a soothing environment for cancer patients, their loved ones, and staff, The Howard Ulfelder, MD Healing Garden is a 6,300-square-foot garden on the 8th floor in the Yawkey Center for Outpatient Care.

With a spectacular view of Boston and the Charles River, The Howard Ulfelder, MD Healing Garden features an enclosed pavilion for use in all four seasons and an exterior section with pathways, a fountain, and seating to accommodate both individuals and small groups. With hundreds of living plants and the soothing sounds of cascading water, the garden provides visitors with a nearby escape from the stresses resulting from illness and the often-bustling, sterile hospital environment.

The Friends of the MGH Cancer Center, hospital leadership, and members of the Cancer Center's medical staff have also participated in planning the garden for the maximum benefit and care of our patients. Our hope is to achieve a mentally and physically restorative space in which visitors will be able to seek and find comfort, inspiration, and strength. "As long-time supporters of this project, we are excited to see the healing garden finally become a reality," states Jensie Shipley and Louise Reimer, for of The Friends of the MGH Cancer Center.

“The therapeutic value of a quiet, meditative environment for individuals affected by a serious illness like cancer is widely recognized,” says Bruce Chabner, MD, clinical director of the Cancer Center. “Our healing garden will be an important complement to the excellent clinical care we provide.”
